The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists
Updates on the film.
2018 sees me continue work towards a feature film adaptation of the novel 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' by Robert Tressell.
Since our crowdfunding efforts in 2016, a screenplay has been in continued development with a talented and experienced writing team, working intensely to crack Tressell's 600+ page length. We hope to debut this screenplay at a public event this summer, for which more information is to follow.
I often receive enquiries about the status of the film from our kickstarter backers, and have this to say: Since the our initial goal, which to shoot the film on a microbudget, we have altered the path somewhat, and in 2017 I made an executive decision to aim for a professional scale adaptation of the novel, to give Tressell's work the resources it deserves, with the goal being a nationwide theatrical release.
With this new goal comes a new timescale. Raising the vast amount of money needed for a film of this proportion takes a long time, with films like this taking years before they hit production. Rest assured that I and the RTP team will be continuing the past 18 months work tirelessly; our most immediate goals being perfecting the script and pitching to investors.
This is a deeply personal, slow-burn passion project for me, and as such I feel duty-bound to do Robert Tressell's memory proud. This is a story that will be told, and I intend to tell it in a style sympathetic to the charismatic and dynamic nature of the book. Whilst we will be moving forwards as consistently as possible, it is important for me to not rush the project, nor crowbar it into a creative dead end or insufficient budget.
I will be continuing work on further projects alongside the development of RTP, in order to seek the respect and influence necessary to get it funded. It will also please some of you to know we are pitching it with some flexibility, and are currently looking into the possibility of a TV drama serial.
We wouldn't be here without the incredible support and patience of you, the fans - thank you. I look forward to when I am able to announce the film's production dates, and hope that 2018 is the year of RTP.
